India: Why the Increase in Persecution?

2.3% of the population in India identifies as Christian, making it the third-largest religion in the country. Because of this, many nationalist Hindus in the highest positions of government and members of the upper castes fear that the advance of religious minorities, such as Muslims and especially Christians, will eventually displace the Hindu majority. As a result, political and religious leaders across the country have incited the Hindu population to resist Christians. This resistance has resulted in false accusations, the destruction of churches, beatings, and murders of Christians. Governments in different states are passing anti-conversion laws. If a Christian is accused of allegedly converting someone from Hinduism to Christianity, they can face a substantial fine and/or jail time of up to 10 years.
For years at Global Commission Partners, we have been supporting our fellow missionaries and other Christians with everything they need to continue bringing people to the Lord from Bibles, water wells, and means of transportation to the construction of church buildings, orphanages, and missionary training centers. Perhaps the most crucial help we provide is the support of hundreds of missionaries and their families to continue reaching the unreached people groups with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. Let us pray for our brothers working in India, one of the most challenging countries in the world. They are doing the Lord’s work amidst persecution and, in many cases, without proper sustenance for their families.
